The Haute Parfumerie Discovery Kit: Why Take 12 Days to Find Your Perfume?
Buying a full bottle of extrait de parfum without wearing it for at least two weeks is like buying a dress without trying it on. The chemistry between your skin, the perfume and your daily life takes time to reveal its true nature.
At JOOJINA, we built our Discovery Kit around a precise period: 12 days. Here is why that length isn't arbitrary — it's the science of perfumery applied to your decision.
The 3 phases of a relationship with a perfume
Days 1-3: The infatuation
You discover the top notes — the first fleeting aromas that catch your attention within 30 seconds. These volatile molecules (bergamot, citrus, fresh mint) are seductive, often theatrical, but rarely the heart of the perfume. Many people buy on this first impression and regret it a week later, once the initial impact fades.
Days 4-8: The heart emerges
The heart notes (floral, spicy, woody) gradually unfold. This is where you learn who you really are with this perfume. No novelty effect — just the molecule, your skin chemistry, your daily life. In our extraits (30–40% concentration), the heart lasts from morning to night: you smell it at work, at home, in the evening. You also discover how it pairs with your clothes, your surroundings, your personal style.
Days 9-12: Staying power matters
You put the perfume on in the morning. Is it still there in the evening? Does it settle on your skin into its base notes (vanilla, musk, woods), or vanish completely? Extrait de parfum (30–40% concentration of essences) shows its true power here. A discovery kit that gives you 12 days answers this crucial question without committing you to a €160 bottle.
Why "haute parfumerie" changes everything
Joanne Désirée Franck, founder of JOOJINA, is a perfumer trained at ISIPCA and at the École de parfumerie Guerlain in Versailles. This means every formula in our kit was composed by someone who truly understands molecular chemistry, olfactory stability, the blending of raw materials, and how pure essences behave on different skin types.
The difference between a generic "niche perfume" and true haute parfumerie is more than cosmetic:
- Pure essences, no cheap extenders: Our extraits use premium raw materials and selected molecules (musks, ouds, responsibly sourced natural florals). No inert diluents to bulk up the volume.
- High concentration (30–40%): You will truly smell the heart of the perfume. No "ghost" scent that fades by lunchtime and leaves you sitting at your desk all afternoon smelling of nothing.
- Intentional, evolving formulation: The notes evolve deliberately over the day — not accidental olfactory decay, but architectural design. The extrait opens, breathes and settles as the hours go by.
- Chemical stability: Extraits keep their olfactory integrity for 3-5 years (vs 1-2 years for eaux de toilette). Any bottle you buy after the test stays unchanged.
The 12-day Discovery Kit: your risk-free test
Our samples aren't generic atomisers ordered in bulk. Each kit contains 4 full-strength extraits de parfum (not diluted for sampling) — enough for 3 days of full wear per fragrance. That means you can genuinely live through the whole cycle we describe (days 1-3: first seduction, days 4-8: the heart revealed, days 9-12: staying power) without forcing yourself to finish a full 100ml bottle you're not completely sure about.
The economics:
- Cost per wear: ~€2 to discover perfumes that, as full bottles, cost between €60 and €160.
- Risk: Minimal. You find your signature without any financial or emotional commitment.
- Vs. the cost of a mistake: Buy a full bottle you don't love and you've thrown away €160. With us, you invest €25 in the trial, and that price comes off your bottle.
How to use your kit over 12 days
Day 1: First application. Note how it evolves hour by hour on your skin — how it changes from the first spray to the end of the day. Keep a small notebook, or send yourself voice notes.
Days 2-3: Reapply the same perfume morning and evening. The accord takes root in your sensory memory. You begin to smell beyond the surface. You notice the small details: how it shifts with your morning coffee, or how it evolves before bed.
Days 4-8: Alternate between two perfumes from the kit. Your nose absolutely needs variety to stay sharp — a well-documented phenomenon called "olfactory adaptation". Compare floral, spicy and woody hearts. Smell the difference in the quality of the raw materials. Ask yourself: which one truly recognises me?
Days 9-12: Go back to the one that has grown on you. Wear it all day. It becomes your signature the moment you'd give it a place in your bathroom — not while you're testing it, but when you're living with it.
Why not 7 days? Why not 30?
Seven days is little more than a long weekend. You don't experience the perfume in bad weather (cold changes how it diffuses), or with your usual work clothes, or at the moments you would genuinely wear it in your routine. It's enough for a "first taste", but not for a real decision.
Thirty days is effectively a classic bottle. At that point you'd have done better to buy an extrait outright — saving €30-50 on the cost of the trial kit and getting more of the formula you finally chose. Thirty days also blurs the line between "trial" and "commitment".
Twelve days? It's the scientifically grounded Goldilocks point: long enough to really know a perfume and its three phases, short enough to remain, psychologically, a trial — no guilt, no pressure to commit.
JOOJINA vs generic kits
Many niche brands sell "discovery" kits. Let's compare:
- Concentration: Their samples are often EDTs (eau de toilette) — 5-10% concentration — too weak for the floral or spicy heart ever to reveal itself. Ours are full-strength extraits.
- Number of fragrances: Their kits contain 6-10 perfumes. You test them in a hurry, with no time for a real cycle for each. Ours: 4 — depth rather than breadth.
- Price: Their kits cost €60-100. No real saving compared with a bottle. Ours: €25, and that price comes off your bottle.
- Design provenance: Their kits are curated around marketing trends. Ours: every formula is composed by an ISIPCA-trained perfumer, specifically for finding a signature.
Our kit: 4 full-strength extraits de parfum (30–40%), 12 days of real wear, a kit price below that of a single full bottle, created and formulated by an ISIPCA-trained perfumer.
After your 12 days
You'll do one of three things:
1. You've found your signature: Order your bottle (30 ml or 100 ml, as you prefer; 80 ml for OOPS I DID IT AGAIN). You know exactly what you're buying. Zero regrets. You'll treasure this bottle. A 100 ml bottle lasts 6-9 months.
2. You loved two perfumes: Order both — or buy an extended kit. You now have an intentional fragrance wardrobe, not a shelf of regretted bottles. You understand your olfactory style: perhaps florals by day, spices by night. Perhaps woods in winter, citrus in summer.
3. None of them really moved you: You saved €135 by learning this with a trial rather than a bottle (or worse, several bottles). Perhaps you'll come back next year, when new formulas join the kit. That's a valid answer too.
How long an extrait lasts: what no one tells you
A bottle of extrait de parfum lasts far longer than you think. 2-3 sprays a day from 100 ml means 6-9 months of daily wear. And unlike EDTs, which fade into the air, an extrait doesn't disappear by evening — there's enough of it to linger, and a heart rich enough to make you feel luxurious all day and into the night.
Which means your initial €160 investment in a bottle isn't a one-off expense — it's a formula that comes back to life every day for 6-9 months. At €160 for 6 months, that's under €1 per wear. Compare that with a daily latte.
That's why it's haute parfumerie. Not just a pretty bottle. A formula that lasts, evolves, and is worth every millilitre.
