Winter Perfume for Women: Warm, Long-Lasting Scents for the Cold

The first cold morning changes everything. The fresh, breezy scent you loved all summer suddenly feels thin and far away — like wearing linen in January. Winter asks for warmth, depth, and something that can hold its own against the cold.

I'm Joanne, an ISIPCA-trained perfumer who trained at the Guerlain School in Versailles before founding JOOJINA in Lausanne — where winter is taken seriously. Here's how to choose a winter perfume that actually works in the cold.

What makes a perfume right for winter

Winter is the season of the heavy, warm notes — the ones that feel like a layer you can't see:

  • Amber and resins — golden, enveloping warmth.
  • Oud and woods — deep, smoky, grounding.
  • Vanilla, tonka and gourmand notes — cosy and a little sweet.
  • Musk — the soft, skin-close warmth underneath it all.

These are the notes that bloom in the cold rather than vanish in it. New to reading a fragrance this way? Start with Perfume Notes Explained.

Why concentration matters most in winter

Here's the science most people miss: cold air carries scent less than warm air. A light eau de toilette that projected nicely in July can fade to nothing within the hour on a freezing day. An extrait de parfum — 30–40% perfume oil — has the richness to push through cold air and stay close to the skin all day. Winter is exactly when concentration earns its keep. JOOJINA extraits for winter

YOU ARE SEXY — our bestselling amber, and a winter natural. A warm declaration up top, then a skin-hugging dry-down of cedarwood, musk and warm woods that the cold only deepens.

Oops I Did It Again — for winter evenings. Gardenia and cherry into oud, amber and tonka bean — rich, bold and unforgettable. (See our oud guide.)

Eau Boisée — the woody choice: sandalwood, cedar and leather, grounding and quietly powerful for grey days.

If you prefer warmth that's brighter than deep, OH LALA! — vanilla, mandarin and florals — brings cosy sweetness without the weight. Our amber and vanilla guides go deeper on the warmest winter notes.

How to transition your fragrance into winter

Lean warmer and richer as the temperature drops. Layer your scent over an unscented moisturiser so it lasts longer on cold, dry skin; concentrate it on pulse points where body heat helps it bloom; and don't be afraid of depth in the evening, when oud and amber have room to breathe. In winter, a fragrance should feel like part of how you keep warm.

Frequently asked questions

What perfume is best for winter?

Warm, rich and concentrated: amber, oud, vanilla, musk and woods. These deep notes need warmth to unfold and hold up in cold air, where light, fresh scents disappear quickly. A winter scent should feel like a cashmere layer, not a summer breeze.

Why does my perfume smell weaker in winter?

Cold air carries scent molecules less freely than warm air, so fragrance projects less outdoors in winter. The answer is concentration — a richer extrait de parfum pushes through the cold far better than a light eau de toilette.

Should I change my perfume for winter?

It helps. A scent that was perfect in summer can feel thin in the cold. Switching to something warmer and more concentrated keeps you noticeable and feels right for the season — cosy, deep and long-lasting.

What's a good long-lasting winter perfume for women?

Look to warm amber, oud or woody extraits. JOOJINA's YOU ARE SEXY (amber) and Oops I Did It Again (oud, amber, tonka) come alive in the cold, while Eau Boisée brings sandalwood, cedar and leather — all at extrait concentration, so they last.

Can I wear vanilla or amber perfume in winter?

Absolutely — they're ideal. Warm, sweet and resinous notes like vanilla and amber are at their best in cold weather, where their cosy depth feels natural and comforting.

Find your winter scent

Winter fragrance is personal, and the same warm extrait wears differently on different skin. The smartest way to choose is to live with a few across a cold week. The JOOJINA Discovery Kit lets you do exactly that: four Swiss extraits de parfum for €25, with a €25 voucher toward your full-size bottle. The kit pays for itself — you're really just choosing which scent carries you through the season.
